"There is nothing remotely ‘contemporary’ about Edmund Rubbra’s symphonies … but … if Rubbra’s music is not of our time it could not have been written at any other, and it is certainly steeped in the English musical heritage. I have always counted the opening of the Fourth as one of the most beautiful things, not just in Rubbra, but in all English music of our time … there is little in the way of surface beauty to seduce the listener, but at the same time it is obvious this music possesses eloquence and nobility, and clearly tells of deep and serious things. Let me say that the performances by the Philharmonia under Norman Del Mar are as dedicated as their earlier accounts of the Sixth and Eighth Symphonies. The recorded sound is pretty much state-of-the-art, with superb clarity and presence and transparent well-defined textures. This is an important issue and is strongly recommended" Robert Layton, Gramophone

"Here is the ideal introduction to the music of Edmund Rubbra. The Third and Fourth symphonies (fine works, both) sandwich two shorter, but still impressive, orchestral works ..." Colin Clarke, www.musicweb-international.com Click here to read the full review
