"What a grievous loss to British music was William Hurlstone’s early demise (a 30-year-old victim of bronchial asthma) - happily, this delightful new Lyrita compilation should do a great deal to help keep his reputation alive. Of the two enormously enjoyable sets of variations recorded here, it’s the later Variations on a Hungarian Air which excites especial admiration: first heard … just three months before the premiere of Elgar’s Enigma Variations, this superbly concise essay packs a wealth of first-rate invention and really effective contrast into its ten-and-a-half minute duration – to my mind this is every bit as imaginative a work as, say, Parry’s near-contemporaneous Symphonic Variations. As usual Lyrita’s sonics are exemplary – particularly warm toned in both sets of variations (where textures really do glow most enticingly). A valuable issue" Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone

"The recordings Nicholas Braithwaite made for Lyrita in the 1990s have to count as some of the best he’s ever done. This CD is no exception: he has total command of the orchestra and great understanding of how to make Hurlstone’s sometimes sentimental music sound as powerfully as it can ..." "[Hurlstone’s] music is immediate in its appeal, partly because of [his] assured craftsmanship, partly because of his obvious delight in orchestral colour. Conductor Nicholas Braithwaite inspires the LPO to lavish affection over these scores ... One of the unsung glories of the Lyrita catalogue, this programme of Hurlstone is recommended with the utmost enthusiasm."
