"There are wonderful things we could do together in creating music, not only concertos and orchestral work, but chamber music," wrote Ernest John Moeran in a letter dated 21 October 1943 to his future wife Peers Coetmore. They had first met in 1930, while Moeran was visiting his friend, the painter Augustus John. Coetmore, a brilliant, former prize-winning student of the Royal Academy of Music, had established herself as a solo cellist of distinction.
